On Air! Developing Oracy Through Radio

Bring history to life and develop pupils' speaking and listening skills using GarageBand on iPad.

With an increasing emphasis on oracy in schools, how can we create meaningful opportunities for pupils to develop their confidence, express themselves clearly and communicate effectively?

In this practical, hands-on session, we'll step back in time to the golden age of radio and explore how creating a historical radio broadcast can provide a purposeful context for developing oracy across the curriculum.

Using GarageBand on iPad, you'll create your own period radio recording, combining spoken word, music and sound effects to bring the past to life.

Along the way, we'll consider how scripting, rehearsing, recording and listening back can help pupils develop their use of vocabulary, pace, tone and expression, while encouraging them to reflect on and improve their spoken communication.

Who is it for?

Primary teachers looking for creative ways to develop oracy across the curriculum, and computing leads seeking practical ideas to share with colleagues.

What you'll need

An iPad with GarageBand installed, ready to take part in the practical activities.
